This year in art, Memorial students will be learning all about the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Once students learn about an Element of Art or Principle of Design, they will apply their knowledge to create an original piece of Art. This month we are focusing on Line.

Happy Chinese New Year !

Memorial students in grades 1- 5 created works of art inspired by Art from Ancient China and our display was put up in the perfect time to celebrate Chinese New Year !

October : Mesopotamia

Students at Memorial School Explored the culture and art of Mesopotamia. They created works of art that were found during this time period such as Mosaics, the Tree of Life and Lamassu Figures. Students also discussed the significance of these pieces. 

September 2015

Exploring art through the ages is this year's Memorial Schools art theme. We will begin our journey  with prehistoric art and work our way through time ending up in The Modern Era. 

During the month of September, we have been digging in the past. Students from first through fifth grade have been learning about Pre-Historic art and discovering what some of the world's first artists created. Following a class discussion about the oldest works of art in existence ( that we have evidence of ) children then created their own "cave art masterpieces" 

Polar Bears and Arctic Lights

During the months of November and December , students have been observing, learning and creating Polar Bears and Arctic Lights.

Each fifth grade student created their own unique "stuffed Polar Bear" using fabric, ribbon, buttons and found objects. Students learned to sew and create with many materials

Forth graders captured polar bear facial expressions while drawing large polar bears. They completed their drawings by using marker strokes to create the texture of the bear's fur and fabric clothes.

Students in grade three created their own mini Polar Bear using cut paper and markers. each mini polar bear's face expresses a thought or feeling. 

The story, "The Blizzard Marker" by Robert Sabuda inspired second graders to paint Polar bear portraits adding Artic fights to the background using chalk. Students learned how to create a fur or fuzzy texture using paint.

Reading "The Three Polar Bears" by Jan Brett, gave the first graders many idea to create their own Polar Bears using paper and makers. During another art class "Artic Lights" by Debbie Miller was read to inspire 1st grade student to create their own Arctic Landscape with a moveable arctic animal.

All art work created is on display now and until the end of December in "Memorial Hall". All whom were able to attend the Winter concert were able to enjoy seeing Memorial students "winter" artwork. 

Native American Art

America the Beautiful is the theme for Memoiral School's art program this year. Students will create and observe art that reflects the character of America throughout generations, starting with Native American Art. Students have been busy, starting in September building totem poles, designing bravery shields, creating Kachinas, weaving and reading Tribal Ledgonds. Some of the books we have read include The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush, The Legend of the Blue Bonnet and The Raven.
